Background

POTS lines have been used of communication for SCADA system for decades. Especially for the long distance Oil&Gas transport system, POTS lines is nearly the only way to send data. But the demand for new POTS lines is decreasing, it’s maintenance is becoming even harder.

In 2019, the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) POTS Lines Forbearance Order 19-72A1 has marked the end-of-life for traditional analog POTS line systems. This means that POTS will become unreliable one day. We need a solution to get rids of the rely on POTS line. But what we’re talking about is a large-scale system with big amount of terminals, we cannot directly update the system.

Today, LTE networks have considerable coverage and are a suitable alternative to POTS. Backed by mature IP network, MoIP (Modem Over IP) and VoIP (Voice over IP) by LTE is ideal solution for SCADA system which provide high reliability and don’t require for replacing terminals. All you need to do is disconnecting the POTS line on your RTU, and connect it to a ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) .

Solution Description

Flyingvoice provide a high-availability POTS replacement solution that mainly consist of three part: an 8 FXS ATA Gateway, an Industrial LTE Router (optional for 2) and an approved power bank (optional for 2). All the components are fit in an IP66 Fire-proof Enclosure, suitable for harsh environment.

PR08 integrate BMS (Battery Management System) to provide power for external devices (PoE and DC output), with its dual type-C ports, you can connect two power banks to add power redundancy for the system. Any device powered by PR08 can still operate after power failure.

Besides power redundancy, network redundancy is also important to SCADA system. PR08 has two WAN port that can connect to different internet access to achieve network redundancy. The LM150 Industrial LTE Router also provide dual SIM card slots for SIM card failover.
